In this Senior Leadership role, The Executive Director will have overall responsibility for running a leading campaign organisation, the Sustainable Energy Association.

The Organisation

Ecuity Consulting LLP (www.ecuity.com) is a growing consultancy specialising in strategy, regulation, policy and politics affecting the sustainable energy sector in the UK and in the EU.

We work with political and business leaders to develop policies which will contribute to a transition to a low carbon economy. The implication of emerging political and regulatory frameworks for sustainable energy can be vital to commercial propositions. We also help shape those policy frameworks through tailored influencing campaigns and close co-operation with government.

For the past seven years Ecuity has provided a complete secretariat service to the Sustainable Energy Association (SEA). We are recruiting for an individual to lead our work with this organisation.

The SEA is at the forefront of developing the future market for sustainable energy within buildings. It a member-based industry body offering innovative policy solutions that link up building-level technologies and the wider energy system to achieve a low carbon, secure energy future for the UK, benefits for consumers, and commercial growth for businesses working in the sector. It is technology agnostic, taking a whole house and whole heating system approach which does not favour one technology over another, but rather focuses on the right solution. It promotes holistic ‘fabric first’ approaches to developing the sector.

The SEA membership includes retailers and manufacturers of energy saving measures, insulation and heating systems, energy suppliers, regulators, housing and finance providers.

The Role

The role sits within a small, dynamic and impactful team. Reporting to the Ecuity Partners and the Executive Members of the Association, the successful applicant will be instrumental in shaping energy efficiency and low carbon energy policies by providing objective, evidence-based positions which maintain and raise the standards within the building performance and fabric sector.

The Executive Director will open doors at a high level within corporate, political and media worlds on behalf of the sustainable energy sector, presenting SEA Member views on key challenges which the UK must overcome in order to decarbonise energy in buildings. You will also provide members of the association with up-to-date information, analysis and insight into key changes affecting the sustainable energy sector and develop policy proposals working with the Ecuity team. You will lead the secretariat service and be responsible for retaining and growing membership to sustain the association through business development activities.

Person Requirements:

Experience and Qualifications – the successful applicant will be educated to degree level with evidence of ongoing professional development and demonstrable experience within a related field. A commitment to sustainability is essential and experience in the energy sector and policy formulation desirable.

Relationship Building and Networking – an important part of the role is to develop successful relationships with the association’s members, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders. You will be able to build strong relationships internally and externally; you will be a successful team player who is committed to working collaboratively.

Campaigns and Public Speaking – the successful candidate will be the face of the organisation in its dealings with politicians and the media. Although the association has an established reputation and network, you will be tenacious in opening doors and highly credible operating in front of business and political leaders. You will be able to convert complex challenges into easily understood analysis, recommendations, reports and presentations. You will need to have excellent written and oral communication skills and feel confident communicating and presenting at meetings, roundtables, external events and to politicians and Government officials.

Organisation and time management – We are looking for a candidate who is well organised and can develop and implement work plans to ensure that tight deadlines are met and time limited opportunities exploited. The successful candidate will also have the flexibility to cope with occasional anti-social working hours (typically evenings rather than weekends). There will be regular travel to London to represent the organisation at meetings with Government departments. Travel throughout the UK will also be required as we regularly visit our members at their sites all over the UK. We also have regular engagement with devolved governments and regions and speak at events. Overnight stays are required at times.
